NAIL ART TUTORIAL: BIRTHDAY IKAT

Today is one half of PYP’s birthday – in celebration we wanted to do a design we’ve always wanted to try – ikat! A few of our favourite blogs have created ikat designs: here & here, feeling inspired we changed the colours up & tested it out on our newly short nails. We love how these turned out, we might have made the design thinner – still getting used to the smaller surface area.

Step 1: After applying a base coat, paint nails with two coats of China Glaze – Happy Go Lucky. When yellow exploded on the scene we couldn’t stop wearing it, lately it’s been pushed on the back burner so we wanted to use the bright shade for birthday celebrations.

Step 2: Once your base colour has completely dried, using Sally Hansen – Whirlwind White paints random spaced out shapes on your nails – 2-3 narrow & long shapes will work best. Ours turned out a little bit chubbier than they should have been.Ā

Step 3: Using your accent colour, we chose Color Club – Lavendarling (sticking we complimentary colours) fill in about half of your white space with colour. You do not have to be precise with this step, anywhere will do.

Step 4: Lastly, using a black nail art striper or black polish (OPI – Black Onyx) and a nail art brush, paint long straight strokes around your design all point vertically. Go all the way around your white shape to create a border. Once this is completed, paint a small shape in the middle – we made a capital letter G or C shape. Seal in your design with a good coat of Seche Vite & you’re complete!

We have to say, fun nails are a great way to distract yourself from turning older – you can always count on nail polish! What do you think of our ikat design, would you give it a try? Let us know what you think of our birthday design on Twitter or Facebook!

  2. This is a use of ikat I can get behind (I feel like it’s going to be one of those trends that you look back and say “2011 & 2012” – maybe moreso than neon) because it’s adorable and temporary! Can you get one of those brushes at Sally? Do you recommend an even smaller brush than you show? I love this!
