SWATCH REVIEW: ESSIE – POPPY-RAZZI

Last month we had the opportunity to attend a Q&A with Essie Weingarten for Toronto Fashion Week where she revealed 4 new collections – 2 were hush hush. Last week we showed everyone Love & Acceptance – a collection full of soft muted pastels, and now…onto the bright neons! We think the Essie Poppy-Razzi collection is one of the most anticipated collections Essie has ever had, as they’ve never done a brights/neons collection before! Way to be on the trends, Essie! We could not wait to try these out. Essie herself let us know that these shades need a little help  – they are best worn with one coat of Essie – Blanc as a base coat & that’s just what we did! You’ll also need a top coat if you want to see some shine because these polishes all dry matte.

Action – we love this shade! The colour reminds us of a bright creamsicle (mmm)! The colour is a nice true orange with a yellowy, melon-ish base. Out of the whole collection we had a bit of trouble with the application of this one – we found it a tad on the streaky side. We used 2-2.5 coats over Blanc for the pictures below.

Camera – this polish is a beautiful red/pink  coral & the one we were instantly drawn to. Most neon collections by other brands stick to a basic pink, orange, etc, but it was nice to see a little change with this one! Camera applied evenly in 2 coats over Blanc. This will be our go-to neon for the summer, not too bright and just the right amount of girly.

Lights – this shade is a nice pop of bright neon pink, we think it just might replace our China Glaze – Flip Flop Fantasy for bright summer toenail shade. (Jersey Shore also kind of ruined Flip Flop Fantasy for us 😦 ) This colour does have a bit of a slight purple undertone, being more of a fuschia than a true pink. We used 2 coats over Blanc for the pictures below.

Bazooka – a little puzzled by the name, but we love the shade nonetheless! It’s hard to do neon red correctly without looking like a deep pink shade or compromising the brightness, but Bazooka does it. The polish has a slight Pantone tangerine tango orange to it. This colour would be beautiful as a base for a nail art design. We used 2 coats for the swatches.

There’s no denying that neon is very in for the season (does it ever really leave?), if you’re hesitant to jump on board with trends why not try with your tips?  As Essie says “Wherever you go, take Poppy-Razzi. My newest, non-stop neons are so on-trend, your nails will look fabulous in a flash!” We think we’ll be seeing a lot of people rocking these shades come summer time. What was your favourite shade? Which colour do you think is worth purchasing? Let us know what your think! The Essie – Poppy-Razzi collection will be in stores this May, available at your local beauty supply store for $9.99.

nice swatches! although id like to see what they look like on there own without a white underneath.

  2. Michele says:

Are Bazooka and Camera close matches to Orange, It’s Obvious and Ole Caliente from the Spring Collection? They look similar in the picture but I know neons can be deceptive.

    • they are a tad brighter/neon & without a top coat neons tend to dry flat looking. if you aren’t into super bright shades i would stick to those from the spring collection, but if you’re into neons these are fabulous!

I love Bazooka and Camera! It does seem like Bazooka looks very similar to “meet me at sunset” and Camera to “one of a kind”… do you think they look similar?

    Amazing, as usual!

My negative opinion, I hateeee the name of this collection and the fact that there are two orange shades. My positive opinion, new neon coral and neon pink!

I cant wait to get these!

would u say lights is close to like essie pink parka?

  9. Marlene says:

Bazooka was the brand name of a pink bubble gum sold at candy stores in the 1940′ and 1950’s. That shade of polish is exactly the same as that gum.

I am so excited to find these in retail and get them for myself. Thanks for the tip to do a layer of Blanc first to prime the nail bed for the neon.

  11. wow, great nails! I love nail polishes from Essie, their colors are so fine

  12. is Lights a similar color to FLip Flop Fantasy, or are you just saying you like it better? and is essie ole caliente similar to Camera?

    • Lights is more of a true pink, where Flip Flop Fantasy has an almost orangey/coral base and is a tad lighter – both are very bright! We like Essie – Lights better than Flip Flop Fantasy now, although we were huge fans of FFF for a few years, Lights is a good replacement.
Camera is more neon, the pictures don’t do the shade justice – it’s less creamy and more vibrant than Ole Caliente.

  13. Jennifer says:

In your pictures of Action, the color looks a lot more yellow-y and less neon than what I’ve experienced with it. Is that because of the blanc underneath? I noticed all the photos I’ve seen of Action look different from when I apply it to my nails. For me, it looks much more orange.

  14. Pls says:

Tried action today too sheer and way too mattew two coats I prefer meet me at sunset

    • All of the Poppy-Razzi are sheer & matte on their own (& are most true neon formulas), a coat of white polish is meant to be worn under each so they’re not sheer!

  15. Kelle says:

Which is brighter, Lights or Flirty Fuschia?
